How can I access the DES?

The fastest way to access the application is via the so-called meta navigation, which can be found on almost every page of the genealogy.net website.

Meta-Navi-Leiste, DES rot eingekreist

Alternatively, the direct link http://des.genealogy.net/ can be used.

In any case the following screen is displayed:

DES-Startseite

Here you can either search the already transcribed data (left button) or view a selection of the projects that are currently in the data entry process (right button).

I would like to search within the data transcribed with DES. What should be considered?

To search in the already transcribed data, select the magnifying glass icon. A inventory of all searchable transcription projects opens.

The data transcribed with the help of DES will not remain here permanently, but they will be gradually transferred into the new source-based and comprehensive database "Gedbas4all".

Since a wide variety of sources can be transcribed with DES, each project has an individual structure of its data. For this reason, a search within the DES can only be performed within a single project at a time.

The most extensive DES project by far, the World War I casualty lists, as well as the address book projects are also accessible via the meta-search.

meta-navigation, meta-search

Note, however, that only the first 20 results from each source type are displayed when using the meta-search. If you want to see all results, you have to search the respective databases individually.

During 2016 and 2017, several address books, which had been previously partly transcribed offline using spreadsheet programs and then imported into a database, were completed by means of the DES. The offline transcribed data are already searchable in the address book database (which is based on Gedbas4all). For this go to: https://adressbuecher.genealogy.net The remaining data transcribed with the DES can be found in the DES search until further notice. Work is currently underway to merge those collections into the Gedbas4all/address book database.

Detailed information on searching within a specific address book can be found on the respective project description page. An overview of all possibly affected address books can be found here: http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Kategorie:Teilerfasstes_Adressbuch However, it should be noted that not all of the books mentioned there can be completed, since the digital copies are not available in every case.

If you would like to search for specific data within DES projects, you will find further information as well as tips and tricks for searching here (in German): http://wiki-de.genealogy.net/Verlustlisten_Erster_Weltkrieg/Bedienungsanleitung#Bedienungsanleitung_f.C3.BCr_Suchende Although this article deals with the casualty lists of WWI, the tips and tricks mentioned there are generally applicable.

I want to participate. What do I have to do?

User ID as prerequisite

In order to participate in the transcription you need a user ID. This is the general identifier with which - in case you already have one - you log in to the GenWiki, the forum or all other offers on Genealogy.net. If you have not yet requested such a user ID, you can do so here:

new user account

I have a user ID but forgot my login data. What do I have to do?

If you already have a user ID, but your login data (password) is no longer available, you can enter your e-mail address here

Zugangsdaten vergessen auf der DES-Anmeldeseite

to request a link for setting a new password. However, this only works if you are actually registered with this e-mail address.

I get the message that my data are not registered. What can I do?

There are basically two options here:

  • You can send an e-mail to zbdb@genealogy.net (indicating your name and/or user ID and valid e-mail address). We can then update the e-mail address.

  • You can register again completely anew. The system recognizes similarities and an administrator decides (if necessary after confirmation by mail) whether to overwrite the old login or create a new user.
